 My first business venture into bait making was 1985, the year of the mine workers strike. I was paid the princely sum of 25p a kilo to hand roll father’s homemade boilies. The smell has not improved over the years but fortunately the rolling process is a little more up to date.

As time went on I developed an interest in Carp fishing, which was my only target species for many years. I used most of the commercially available baits over the years before I realised that most of these were soon blown due to their overuse. I decided that what I needed to get consistently good results was an edge.  I played with the idea and finally decided that what I needed was a bait of my own design, one which no one else had. The Ultimate Edge!

My early trials were far from impressive and I soon realised that this was not going to be an easy task which I has set myself. But the rewards, when you finally catch that first fish on your own bait, more than make up for all the hours that have gone into developing it.

Over the years recipes were tweaked and suppliers changed until eventually I had a bait which I had total confidence in and one which was giving consistently good results. Eventually my interest turned to the local rivers where I decided to turn my attention to the pursuit of our most magnificent of river fish, the Barbel.

The boilie was already an established bait in most Barbel fisher’s armoury and I was soon developing my own bait based on my previous success.  Once I was happy with the results it was giving, it was a natural progression to produce a matching paste and glug and soon came the introduction of the popular dumbbell range. The pastes and glugs work well both in summer and winter and allow a steady flow of scent to be release from the hook bait without over feeding or disturbing your swim too much. As a general rule a golf ball size past wrap will take about an hour to dissolve in a good flow on a winter river.

As for flavours, I have found that a bait with good quality ingredients doesn’t’t need a whole range of flavours and so at present the range consists of just two, Liver and Shrimp both of which have produced well over a long period on many different types of water.Flavours catch fishermen, good bait catches fish.That is not to say there won’t be further developments, several new ideas are being trialed on the Kennet this season and early results look promising.

Two things in life I enjoy, one is to spend time on the river bank with my father and my son. One I learn from and the other I teach to, but sometimes I’m not sure which way round that is. The other is to get a phone call at midnight telling me that someone has just landed a PB on my bait, which is some buzz.

Lodge bait is not the magic solution, you still need skills to catch fish. But it is a good bait with only quality ingredients, produced by fishermen, for fishermen with no compromise for profit margins.
